HISTORY OF DIGITAL MARKETING
Introduction
In simple terms, Digital Marketing refers to the marketing of products or services through digital technologies. In recent years, digital platforms are more implemented into marketing plans and everyday life, and as individuals utilize digital devices instead of going to physical stores, digital marketing campaigns are becoming more prevalent and effective.
Marketing has always been about making the right connections with the right people at the right time. That indicates one must meet the customers where they already spend their time through various online platforms. Digital marketing encompasses all marketing efforts that use an electronic device or the internet. Businesses use digital channels such as search engines, social media, email, and their websites to engage with present and potential customers.
History of Digital Marketing
Evolution of digital marketing

The Early Days (In the 1980s)
The real birth of Digital Marketing happened in the 1980s when IBM created the first personal computers. It is proven to be a powerful tool that collects customer information resulting in the digital database to develop relationships between customers and the company.
Moving Into the 1990s
CRM systems gained recognition in the 1990s and were characterized as software that could track consumer behavior and allow marketers to make reliable predictions about future buyer behavior. Sales Force Automation (SFA) was one of the first CRM systems, and it was crucial in gathering data on stockpile management, as well as producer and consumer relations.
In 1993 the first banner advertisement was started, and the first web crawler was developed in the year 1994. Hence it was the birth of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Google as a search engine started in the year 1998. Google helped in creating successful Digital Marketing Campaigns and Search Engine Marketing. During this period Microsoft launched the search engine ‘MSN’ and Yahoo web search was brought to the market via Yahoo.

The Early 2000s
In early 2000, marketing noticed a high impact of technological advances. In 2004, Google went public, and in June 2007, the iPhone was born. Later to this, consumer purchasing behavior changed in the way that customers were searching for products or services mainly online. Soon after, Google began to grow, and social networking sites got on board. The first social networking site was Myspace, which was quickly followed by Facebook. As a result, businesses have realized that all these new sites are providing them with new opportunities to sell their products and brands.
The 2010
In 2011, Google+ was launched, to promote digital marketing. The term "digital marketing" has gained popularity in recent years, especially in certain nations. In the United States, online marketing is still common; in Italy, it is known as web marketing; however, in the United Kingdom and worldwide, digital marketing has become the most used phrase, especially since 2013. As digital marketing improved, marketers began to change their focus away from irrelevant and huge material towards focused and quality advertising. Advertisers pay for articles, videos, and other forms of media to be published on news and media websites. The top three social networking sites utilized by marketers were LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook.
Later in 2017, Artificial intelligence helps digital marketing. AI enables marketers to personalize their communications on an individual level rather than the generic target groups that marketers relied on in the past. For instance, many companies have chatbots on their website. It is the platform where individual customers can ask their queries related to the expected product or service.
Nowadays companies simply cannot afford to ignore digital marketing if they want to remain competitive. And, as the globe becomes more connected, digital marketing will continue to force internet innovation, just as the internet drives digital marketing novelty.
